It’s Only Week Three — So Why Does January Feel This Hard?

Wayward Wellness Coaching

If your motivation already feels gone, it’s not laziness or lack of discipline

...it’s biology, and we need to talk about it.

↓ ↓ ↓

What We’ll Cover This Week:

  • Why motivation fading right now is completely normal
  • The nervous-system reason habits start slipping
  • What I actually drink *pretty much* every morning
  • A small moment that uncovered a big inherited belief
  • A heads-up about a free 3-day live training I’m hosting soon

Hey Reader,

Be honest —
How is it only three weeks into January, but it feels like we’ve lived several lifetimes since New Year’s Eve?

Because I swear NYE was three months ago.

The glitter’s gone. The motivation ghosted. And suddenly the goals we were so confident about are side-eyeing us from across the room.

And here’s why this timing matters.

There’s actual science behind the idea that it takes about three weeks (roughly 21 days) to make or break a habit. It’s not a magical number — it’s a nervous system checkpoint.

For the first couple of weeks, novelty and adrenaline do a lot of the heavy lifting.
But right around week three, that wears off.

At that point, your nervous system has to decide:
Is this new behavior safe enough to keep?
Or should we go back to what’s familiar and predictable?

Which means by now, one of two things is usually true:
Either the habit has become regulated enough to stick —
or you’re off the bandwagon and sliding back into old patterns.

Here’s the truth most people skip:

Most people don’t quit their New Year’s intentions because they’re lazy.
They quit because their nervous system goes, “Cool story. I’m tired. We tried.”

Motivation fades. That’s normal.
Willpower isn’t a strategy.

And when your system is dysregulated, consistency doesn’t feel empowering — it feels unsafe. (I know… I even feel a little weird saying that word. But it’s accurate.)

I think about my rescue pup, Marley. When we first adopted him, his nervous system was constantly under fire. He wasn’t being “difficult” — he was overwhelmed. Everything felt unsafe until we slowly built trust and predictability.

Human nervous systems work the same way.

So when change doesn’t feel safe yet, your body does exactly what it’s designed to do:

It taps out.

That’s not failure.
That’s biology.

The Plan for the Next Few Weeks...

Instead of pretending everyone’s still crushing January (lol), I’m going to spend the next few weeks sharing real, doable ways to stay regulated and stay in the game — even if your “resolution” has softened into more of an intention-ish vibe. (As I heard someone say their "dry January" has turned into "damp January" 😅)

No extremes.
No perfection.
No “new year, new personality.”

Just support.

We’ll start simple this week.

My Morning Drink (Before You Judge Me)...

Full transparency first:
This is not the epitome of whole-food purity.
This is not a gut-healing potion whispered about on wellness TikTok.

This is me living by the 80/20 rule. Because I'm really just not ready to give up my Fairlife Core Power Protein shakes as creamer... even if it does "destroy my gut".

Here’s what I usually drink in the morning:

  • A tiny spoonful of Folgers instant coffee
(I know. Don’t come at me. I don’t really drink coffee anymore — I just like the taste. And it’s all Nick drinks. 🙄. You can also substitute this for REAL coffee or my previous favorite, Mushroom Coffee)
  • 3 pumps of Jordan’s Skinny Mixes Pistachio (sugar-free)
  • A healthy splash of Core Power vanilla protein shake
  • L-glutamine
→ to support gut balance, especially under stress... and to balance out the rest
  • One scoop of Thrive chocolate collagen powder

No affiliate links.
No commission.
Just things I actually use because they’re easy, comforting, and supportive.

Is it perfect? Nope.
Is it repeatable when motivation is low? Yep.

And that’s the point.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems...

Staying “on track” isn’t about discipline.
It’s about lowering the nervous system load so your body stops fighting you.

Which brings me to something that hit me sideways this week.

A Quick Story (and Why I’m Hosting a Free Webinar)...

I had a memory of a specific day about a year ago, I looked in the mirror and said out loud:

“My arms look so flabby — I hate it.”

Without missing a beat, Nick said,

“You sound just like your mom.”

And suddenly it was clear.

That voice wasn’t mine.
It was absorbed.

And honestly? That realization made me sad — not just for me, but thinking about how my mom probably absorbed that voice too.

So many beliefs women carry were never consciously chosen.
They were absorbed. Modeled. Passed down quietly.

And they don’t just affect how we see our bodies —
they affect how we approach goals, consistency, rest, worth, and success.

That’s why I’m hosting a free 3-day live webinar series on:

  • the beliefs we inherit
  • how they quietly run our lives
  • and how to start loosening their grip without blowing your life up

You don’t have to attend live.
And if you miss it, I’ll be sharing the replay links right here in the newsletter so you still have access.

No pressure. No urgency tricks.
Just something I think matters.

More details on the day and time to come in the coming week.

Next week, we’ll talk about inflammation — how stress shows up in the body, why it makes consistency harder than it needs to be, and what actually helps calm things down.

And if you want to reply and tell me what you attempted to commit to this year — or where things started to wobble — I read every message. Some of you already did. Thank you 🤍

You didn’t fall off.

Your nervous system just needs a little backup.
